Robyn kaakeRobyn is a newly minted Assistant Adjunct Professor at UCSF who uses proteomics techniques to study infectious disease. Her specialty is something called cross-linking mass spectrometry (XL-MS) and if you ask her to explain it she will do so with great excitement (and perhaps too much detail), often using weird metaphors based on nearby props. When she isn't doing science, she enjoys swimming, odd crafts, board and video games, hiking, grabbing a beer, and hanging with her cat (not usually all at the same time, but what a day that would be).

michael mcgregorMichael is a Senior Research Associate based at The Gladstone Institutes. With a background in bioengineering and molecular/cellular biology, his primary role has been to help advance the scientific research goals of the Krogan Lab through technology and methods development, although he does also like to let off some creative steam whenever he can by making pretty pictures for scientific papers and editing podcasts. Outside of work he enjoys hiking, cycling, photography, watching cartoons and playing video games.

Paige HaasPaige is a graduate student studying Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, and is interested in how hosts interact with viruses. She studies regulatory proteins called E3 ubiquitin ligases to identify signaling pathways that affect HIV infection. Outside of lab, she enjoys hiking, board games, and reality TV.

kelsey haasKelsey is a graduate student in the Tetrad program working in Dr. Nevan Krogan’s lab at UCSF and Gladstone Institutes. Combining her backgrounds in cellular & molecular biology and proteomics, she studies how influenza viruses (aka “the flu”) infect and rewire human cells. When she’s not science-ing, this Seattleite-turned-San Franciscan enjoys exploring national parks and California’s coast, hiking, kayaking, pilates, board game nights and experimenting with new cocktail recipes (for said game nights).

Joe hiattJoe is a student in the Medical Scientist Training Program here at UCSF. He was born in Tokyo and then lived in Moscow until he was 6. Sadly, he has only American citizenship; and the only Russian he remembers translates to "I want cookie." These early failures prepared him well for a life in science. He studied archaeology at Harvard, learning about ancient agriculture and brewing through stable isotope analysis under the tutelage of Dr. Noreen Tuross. He then spent three years at the NIH in the lab of Dr. Anthony Fauci studying the first interactions of the HIV envelope protein gp120 with host T cells. Now a student of Dr. Nevan Krogan and Dr. Alexander Marson, Joe continues to investigate how infectious diseases hijack human systems, a passion he hopes to indulge in for the rest of his career.

Mehdi bouhaddouMehdi Bouhaddou is a National Cancer Institute funded postdoctoral fellow in the Krogan lab at UCSF and Gladstone Institutes. He is primarily a computational biomedical scientist, meaning he analyzes large biological datasets to extract new insights related to disease and how to better treat them. His research and interests center around cancer, virology, and global health. Mehdi is also passionate about mentoring and promoting students from backgrounds that are poorly represented in the sciences, finding that diversity enriches the scientific experience. In his free time, Mehdi trains for triathlons, plays tennis — his secret dream is to one day participate in the olympics!

Gina nguyenGina is the Asst. Director of Communications & Events at the Quantitative Biosciences Institute (QBI) at UCSF. With a background in the arts and entertainment, she evangelizes the research at QBI through experiential marketing and community engagement and aims to make science more accessible to the general public. On her time off she enjoys hiking, birding and singing to her cat.

Alexa RocourtAlexa is a Media and Events Coordinator at the Quantitative Biosciences Institute (QBI) at UCSF. With a background in journalism and graphics design, she promotes and produces collaborative science in creative ways. During her free time, she enjoys elevating underreported narratives that deserve coverage, getting artistic with a pencil and brush, dancing, drinking hot chocolate, watching dramas and spending time with nature.
